In Conversation with Louise Markey

Lead by a passion for a traditional bleus de travail and artist’s smocks, L.F Markey is known for their use of bold and bright fabrics. Having been a designer for brands such as Burberry, Louise shifted her attention to contemporary variations of workwear staple pieces and launched L.F Markey in 2013.

I have always loved the timelessness of the styles and the endless opportunity to alternate and create multiple looks. My favourite pieces are the Sawyer skirt matched with the Fletcher top. The linen romper is on the wish list for the summer too.

Louise went on to launch a new brand in 2018 called Meadows, inspired by Victoriana, prairie-style, and folklore. I love the romantic feel to each piece, infused with femininity and the gorgeous shapes.

With sustainability at the focus of each brand, Louise makes a conscious effort to produce each item ethically and source sustainable fabrics. This is something I have always been passionate about, and consider when choosing pieces for the Caro fashion ranges.

We catch up with Louise on her day-to-day life...

What does a typical day look like for you?

I start work in bed on my phone around 6.30am (a bad habit I know!) and work until my kids wake up. I get to the office around 9.30 after school drop. We work in Hackney Downs in east London and it’s a vibrant location, I try to always get out and about on my lunch break. I clock off around 3pm and spend the rest of the day with my children. I start work again for a couple of hours once they’ve gone to bed.

Where’s your dream escape destination?

I went to India about 10 years ago and I’d love to get back there, such a wonderful place.

What’s your vice?

Wine! Of any colour.

What are you listening to at the moment?

For the last year anything outside of work and childcare seems to have gone out the window! Can’t remember the last time I read a book I’m ashamed to say. I’m moving to the countryside in a few months and I’m hoping to redress this work/life balance. I’ve optimistically just bought a new novel ‘They’ by Kay Dick, I’m yet to read a page!

Whats your favourite thing to eat?

My official favourite meal is my mum’s homemade Kedgeree. But on a usual night I would opt for Japanese or Vietnamese food

What are you most curious about?

I tend to be very interested in science, I loved physics at school.

What’s the most memorable piece of advice you’ve received?

Don’t worry tonight about things you can’t resolve until tomorrow.

What are your top 3 items at Caro?

I visited Caro last year and it’s such a delight! Everything is so covetable. Currently I am lusting after the Sepia Glassware, the Garden Bench, and everything under the ‘Utility’ section!
